From last May…this was a notable walkabout. While on a packrafting/backpacking trip through Cataract Canyon last fall I floated by, then hiked above, Gypsum and Bowdie Canyons. I stared incessantly at them on the map for many months until I could get back to explore them. Off-the-beaten-path to say the least and a loop where you’re hard pressed to see any other people, save for a rancher from Dugout checking on his cattle up there. The water that carves its way through both canyons creates little oases from the uplands of the Sweet Alice plateau all the way to the river. While you could hike along the river to connect the two, I brought my lightest weight packraft (it’s all flat water below Gypsum) which was a nice compliment to the tedious canyon walking. Bowdie proved slow-going compared to Gypsum, but the route-finding was fun and the waterfalls were incredible! Definitely would come back.
